Historical background of skirting Board.

Skirtingboards were earlier used to cover the junction of the floor and that of the wall. They were best used when the walls were wet-plastered in order to achieve a neat edge to the bottom of the wall. There were structures known as architraves that were placed around doors and they performed the same function as skirtingboards. Today they are not used since machine cut plasterboard and metal edge beads for plaster are in use.

However, we still hold on skirtingboards since they are fast to use and also as a result of their poor workmanship.as professional architects, we have done away with architraves and skirting boards and decided to use a small recessed shadow gap which forms a joint between the floor and the wall clearly. On doing this, it makes the wall planes to seem floating over continuous wall planes hence appearing to be neat.

In addition to that disagreements have arisen concerning skirtingboards providing shield and protection to the wall finish from destruction by vacuum cleaners. This is however not necessary as it is better to avoid damaging your house.

They serve as a protection since if not used, these luxurious moves like toy cars, assorted bikes, and pus chairs would have left our buildings with broken fragments. Skirting board serve several importance’s that include; hiding the gap formed between wooden floorboards and masonry. This is relevant since it prevents transfer of damp and enables the boards to contract and expand depending on temperature and humidity.

On the other hand, skirting board can give you a backache and also make use of your time maybe when you need a comfort since you have to paint them over and over to make them attracting.

Skirting board emerged in order to combine it with plasterwork thus developing an attractive wall frame.
